Name Isn’t Only BIG Change at Falkirk Golf Club
Central Valley, NY
Change already is evident all around Falkirk Golf Club in Central Valley, N.Y., and dramatic improvements are in the planning. The old Central Valley Golf Club name was gone as soon as local developer Wayne Corts and Rockland businessman Barry Fixler took over four months ago. Falkirk is the name of the adjacent estate, and a small town in Scotland, the home of golf.
Down came weeds, revealing an attractive stone wall. Up went more than 600 trees and shrubs. The parking lot was reconstructed. A mid-course restroom was added, along with several other touches all over the property. Restrictive rules were relaxed. Management is reaching out to area businesses to explore joint promotions and providing free use of the course to Woodbury High Schoo’s golf team.
The changes come almost daily at Falkirk, which draws a significant share of golfers from Rockland County and already is noteworthy for its reasonable green fees.
“It’s a pretty golf course as it is, but it needed some tender loving care that had been missing over the last couple of years,” said Ken Vrana, Falkirk general manager. “It was kept up, but not enhanced.”
Enhancement hardly covers the magnitude of improvements in the planning. Even at 5,200 yards, Falkirk already is challenging with its undulating greens, tight fairways, uneven lies and changes in elevation.
Plans are to extend it to championship length at around 7,000 yards, and the infrastructure is being upgraded, from lockers, the pro shop and banquet facilities to golf carts and irrigation and maintenance equipment. Planning also is under way for a snowboard park on the course’s steepest terrain.
It’s a far cry from the attractive but neglected course of old.
“They say that we did more work in the first three weeks than the past owner did in the last 30 years,” Corts said. “We’re making it into a more pleasant place to play golf.”
The course is a natural refuge for golfers whose shopping spouses frequent nearby Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, Vrana said.
“A guy who played here for the first time recently asked if he could play nine holes because his wife was shopping at Woodbury Common,” Vrana said.
I said, ‘Only nine holes? Your wife must not be the shopper that mine is, because I could play 18 holes.’ He laughed and went out and played nine holes and came back in and said, ‘Can I play nine more holes? My wife isn’t finished shopping.’”
